Rachel Abrams at the NY Times “Walmart Worker Advocates Express Skepticism Over Raises” reports that while Walmart has raised wages for many workers, it’s created a mandatory training program, Pathways, that allows it to pay workers only $9/hour (instead of the promised $10) and takes up to 18 months to complete.

In contrast, a naval aviator’s primary flight training takes all of 22 weeks. We bet you had no idea how tremendously skilled a Walmart worker needs to be.

With 450,000 new employees expected to go through the training program this year, that’s a huge savings for Walmart and, at the typical 32 hours/week for a worker, up to $748 million they don’t earn.
