President-Elect Trump is considering the CEO of Hardee’s and Carl’s Jr. burger joints to be Secretary of Labor. Andrew Puzder has been a vocal critic of increasing the minimum wage and the Department of Labor’s now-stalled overtime rule, which was supposed to add overtime pay for workers making as little as $23,000.
He’s also a wage thief. HourVoice’s analysis of DOL enforcement data shows that CKE Restaurants, which owns Hardee’s, Carl’s Jr., Green Burrito, and Red Burrito, and their franchisees committed 1,090 “case violations” over 90 cases between 2002 and 2015, stealing wages from 982 employees.
Researchers and workers advocates are welcome to the HourVoice dataset, which is a cleaned-up version of DOL’s “Whisard” file. Company names have been “canonicalized” to permit aggregation at the corporate/franchisor level. Contact Don Chartier at dchartier AT hourvoice DOT com.
